HEIC to WebP converter
Convert HEIC to WebP in your browser. Smaller files for the web, without uploading anything.
Why convert HEIC to WebP
WebP exists for one job: shipping images over the web with less bandwidth. At the same visual quality it typically lands 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG, which is why it shows up in page speed reports as the recommended format.
Browser support is no longer the obstacle it once was — Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all decode WebP. The gap is everywhere else. Older photo software, some print services, a few email clients and plenty of desktop viewers still will not open it. Treat WebP as a delivery format for your own site, not as a file you hand to another person.
Camera metadata is not carried over in this conversion, which is usually what you want for images going onto a public website. If you need the shot date and GPS position kept, convert to JPG instead.
Questions
Does this keep the original photo date?
No. The converter writes the pixels only, so the shot date, GPS position and camera settings are not carried over into the WebP. Convert to JPG instead if you need that information kept.
What if a HEIC file holds more than one image?
Some HEIC files contain several images. Turn on "Extract every frame" and each one is saved as a separate file, numbered in order. With the option off, only the main image is converted. The moving part of a Live Photo is a separate video file, not part of the HEIC, so it is not converted.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. The files are read from disk into memory and never sent over the network, which also means conversion speed depends on your own device.
Can I make the converted photos smaller?
Yes. Set "Max size" to limit the longest side, for example to 1920 or 1600 pixels for a website or an email. Photos smaller than the limit are left at their original size. Lowering the quality slider makes the files smaller as well.
How many files can I convert at once?
There is no hard limit. Past about 25 files the browser slows down noticeably on phones and older laptops, so you will see a warning, but you can continue.
